Jamie Vardy could be England’ secret weapon

England will make their debut at Euro 2016 today, in the first match of group B, against Russia, and everybody is expecting big things from Roy Hodgson’s side. The starting 11 wasn’t revealed yet, but it’s less likely for Jamie Vardy to be part of it, as Lallana, Kane and Rooney might be the three options when it comes to strikers. Still, the Foxes’ top goalscorer could be England’ secret weapon during the tournament!

Derby County’s former international Roy McFarland is optimistic before England’s debut and thinks that Vardy might be the one who can act as a catalyst in the game against Russia, according to The Derby Telegraph.

“The England team is youthful and very exciting. Jamie Vardy can be a key player for Roy’s side but I would be looking for him to start from the bench,” he said. “If you go back to the 1966 World Cup, Jimmy Greaves was England’s main striker and Sir Geoff Hurst was used from the bench. I think that kind of role would suit Vardy, who will go into Euro 2016 with bags of confidence after the success that Leicester City have had this year.”

Mr. McFarland also said that England can be just as surprising as Leicester was this season and Jamie Vardy could have a huge contribution to this.

Throughout history, England have never won their opening game at a European Championship, so it’s obvious that there’s a lot of pressure on Roy Hodgson’s sides this Saturday. Therefore, a positive start against Russia is mandatory.

If the manager will indeed rely on a 4-3-3 formation, with Lallana, Kane and Rooney, Jamie Vardy will definitely replace one of them during the second half. However, there were also rumors about Roy Hodgson’s assistant, Ray Lewington, revealing the starting eleven to the press by mistake and it seems that Vardy will actually play from the first minute.

Finally, no matter how much he will play in the first game against Russia, there’s no need to say that everybody is looking forward to seeing Jamie Vardy making a spectacular game, as he did most of the season for Leicester.
