Leicester fans had all the reasons to be worried in the past weeks, as major clubs all over Europe started showing interest in three of their essential players, who contributed to this year’s EPL success. We’re talking about Vardy, Mahrez and Kante, of course, who have been linked with moves to Arsenal or Chelsea.
According to the latest rumors, the Gunners are indeed interested in Jamie Vardy, but Riyad Mahrez is not on their list. The Algerian might have reached a number of 17 goals and 11 assists this season, but Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan seems to be a hotter prospect, especially after the Armenian midfielder rejected a new contract.
Mkhitaryan, aged 27, has just 12 months remaining on his current contract and, according to his agent, there aren’t any exact plans to sign an extension. Borussia Dortmund are reported to ask €35 million for the midfielder, who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer.
Arsenal has all the reasons to pick him, actually. Yes, Mahrez has been stellar for Leicester this season, but it’s less likely for him to perform similar or even better next season, in a new team, as this rarely happens when a player like him switches sides. On the other side, Mkhitaryan has also spent time playing in Champions League, a competition which, like every year, makes one of Arsenal’s objectives for this season.
If the Arsenal move won’t indeed be completed, Riyad Mahrez still has a lot of offers to pick from. Manchester City and Manchester United are also keen on signing the Algerian for the upcoming season, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are hoping to bring him to Spain.
“He still has three-year contract. There’s contact, both in England and outside of England,” Kamel Bengougam, Mahrez’s agent, said last month. “He can stay, or if a big club makes an offer and offers a good project, he could leave.”
If Arsenal have their priorities in the right order, Riyad Mahrez will spend another season at Leicester and, hopefully, become a top-class player.
