Ray Hodgson’s future as manager is uncertain

England boss Roy Hodgson seems to be focusing solely on the upcoming matches at Euro 2016, avoiding talking about his future. The 68-year-old’s contract is set to expire this summer and there are big chances for him to sign an extension if the team reaches at least the quarter finals at the tournament.

“It has been raised many times before, so it doesn’t make any difference to me one way or another,” the England manager said. “My contract runs out after this tournament, that’s a fact that everyone has known about now for the last two years. On a regular basis it gets brought up – should I stay? Do I want to stay? What should the FA do? Nothing changes in that respect, as far as I am concerned,” Hodgson added.

The manager confirmed that he’s only interested in obtaining another victory this Monday, against Slovakia, which will allow England to finish at the top of Group B.

“There’s only one thing on our minds and that’s to win the next game and see how far we can go. Whether that happens to be the the last 16 or the quarterfinals, semifinal, final, who knows? It will depend on our performances,” the manager said.

FA chairman Greg Dyke, on the other side, considers that if England “do well” and “play well” at the tournament, Roy Hodgson’s contract will definitely be renewed.  He also mentioned that a decision regarding this won’t be taken until the end of the tournament, hinting that a semi-final or even a quarter-final finish will increase Hodgson’s chances to land a new contract.

One of the first players who expressed his desire to continue working with England’s manager was Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

“Of course, as players, we want him to stay, but that is down to his bosses,” the forward said. “In fairness to the Premier League clubs they’ve brought young players through and Roy has picked them and, in my opinion, created a very good team, but also a fantastic atmosphere around the training ground and when we meet up.”
